Your church may already be working with foster children, youth, and age-outs.
Since 3% of Christian homes foster children, it is possible that your Youth and College & Career groups are already teaching and doing activities with foster children about to age out or who have already done so.
Here are some things you should know about foster care age outs:
-
20% of age-outs become homeless at age 18.
-
Only about half of prior foster kids will become gainfully employed by age 24.
-
Less than 3% of age-outs will ever earn a college degree.
-
70% of female age-outs will become single moms by age 21.
The good news is that every foster age-out has advantages that, if properly utilized, could help them beat these statistics. However, even when these young folks are aware of their entitlements, most of them will not have the guidance needed to help them stay dedicated to completion.
